Chapter Ending with Music Show

The Smiles Show got its start on 96.5 low power (LP) FM KUBU in Sacramento in January 2016. I had the privilege of learning from the late Shane Carpenter, who was an avid and passionate Access Sacramento employee, and huge KUBU supporter. His energy, passion, and patience helped me take the leap from learning about radio to actually doing radio. I was afraid of all the various buttons on the console at first, and not sure I could successfully do my own radio show. But with Shane‘s support, and informational workshops, I got to where I not only felt comfortable, but truly enjoyed handling the controls, and creating my very own weekly radio shows.

Over time, the way I created the shows changed. At first, I created the shows in the Access Sacramento Studios in the Coloma center in the Elmhurst neighborhood in Sacramento, and then later transitioned to creating them remotely, from home, during the pandemic. This was another learning curve, learning how to do a remote broadcast, and then getting the files to the station. But Shane was there again to provide guidance and support, and equipment recommendations that proved to be very helpful. Although Shane is no longer with us, the other staff and team members at Access Sacramento have also been very helpful and supportive in helping me and all the other KUBU radio producers create fun and engaging and local radio!

I have enjoyed the pleasure of creating music shows with a different theme each week. It’s been fun, taking random theme suggestions from my listeners, and also ideas that pop up my head while taking a shower, or at 2 AM when I can’t sleep, and translating them into a musical adventure each week!  And it’s been fun getting to know some of the listeners that regularly listen to and engage with the show.

But, alas, all good things come to an end, and KUBU will be ending their FM and mobile app operations on Saturday, March 29. That means all the shows you’ve come to enjoy and love over the years on KUBU will no longer be available as they have been since KUBU became an LPFM radio station back in 2015. Unfortunately, that also includes The Smiles Show.

I am looking for new possibilities for continuing a music edition of The Smiles Show on another platform, including other LPFM radio stations, and/or other platforms that will allow listeners to continue to tune in and enjoy the music along with me.

In closing, I want to thank each of you who have listened to the music edition of The Smiles Show. Whether you have been tuning in regularly, or just occasionally, I appreciate you. Music brings us together in the community, and during these often rather uncertain and challenging times, the music offers some peace and solace.

I also want to thank KUBU and Access Sacramento, for giving me the opportunity to have a weekly platform for my music show for the last 9 years. It’s been a fun ride, and I eagerly await the next chapter! To be continued…

Notes:

1.  New music editions for The Smiles Show will continue each Wednesday through March 26, 2025, at 2pm PT on 96.5 LPFM KUBU.  I hope you can tune in as I’ve got some fun themes lined up!
